Commentary: Micheal Brown

So now that I've completed the 100 Days of Happy challenge, I'm in more of a mood to start blogging regularly. I really want to stick to this goal. Here goes nothing.

The past few months the media has been inundated with the case of Micheal Brown's death at the hands of (former) Officer Darren Wilson. After a certain point, I personally couldn't stand hearing about the case anymore. The news media cycle was just chewing on the same information for weeks on end until the final verdict from the grand jury. While I have respect for both sides of the case - those who support the actions of the officer and those who see Brown as a victim - there are many more things I fail to understand.

First and foremost, how does this country move on past this point after the protests (and unfortunate looting). It's easy to have a protest; in the age of social media it can be almost effortless to organize one. But who amongst those protesters is now going to work towards the outcome that is needed to prevent another Brown-Wilson case? Where is the dialogue that will happen between both sides to work in this direction? I really appreciate that the POTUS (teehee) is at least attempting to start some sort of inquiry into how police departments interact with minority communities. If there is no plan for what happens after the protest, these events will just continue to repeat themselves in an endless loop. This is what I've experienced over the course of my life in the United States and I cannot understand why.

Secondly, what occurred at the police-victim interface and why. It is clear that some sort of interaction occurred between Brown and Wilson at the police car when the former was approached by the latter. And based on Wilson's telling of the events, there was some sort of altercation. This for me is where things start to get hazy. Newton's laws of physics state that for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. This law is not only specific to molecules, but to people as well. Seeing as how Brown was a young man, I can understand how me may not have a respect for authority and could have misread and reacted poorly to the situation at hand. This of course leaves Wilson to counter-react in a way that he perceives is appropriate. One of the issues I have in these police brutality cases is that I fail to see some of these situations as completely spontaneous interactions where one side is completely in the wrong. Yes, clearly there are times where the reaction is just explosive and unwarranted leading to tragedy. But if the first step is already in the wrong direction, how can we be surprised when things start to spiral out of control. Especially when we live in a country where police are always armed and there always exists the possibility that the person on the other side can be armed. Fear, misperception, and poor training are at the heart of these issues more than anything. And when all of these factors are tied in with the adrenaline rushing through both parties, it's going to end badly.

I recently heard an excellent story about a police force in Alaska that respected the wishes of the native community they protect and did not arm the officers patrolling these communities. Until recently, police officers were able to patrol and control situations such as the one above WITHOUT using guns. A tragic event in which a police officer lost his life to an armed man under the influence has changed this norm. But it shows how it is possible for police to effectively do their job without first reaching for a weapon. Not to mention that tasers and pepper spray can do plenty of good in a lot of situations.

The last point I want to make is with regards to the eye-witness testimony. Testimony from those present at the scene of events can be invaluable to a case. However, in present times some scrutiny has been placed on how reliable this testimony can be. Even when it is clear a person witnessed a crime, recall of the events is not always correct and through no fault of the eye-witness. In regards to the Brown-Wilson case it has recently come to light that many of the about 40 witnesses have given false testimony. Some were not even present at the events that took place. Even more disgusting than this, it is clear that some witnesses blatantly lied to drive their own racist motives. If there is so little credibility in the account of this case, I just cannot wrap my head around how there can be credibility for anything else. I believe the forensic evidence, as it cannot be falsified, but that is all I can really believe at this point.

I think it is really wonderful that many are using this case as a galvanizing  point for change within our country.

I wish however that this muddled case did not overshadow the unfortunate others that are more clear and could drive even more people toward this cause.
I want people to protest for the adapted black boy who was mistreated by police when entering the house he lived in with his adoptive white family.
I want people to protest for the unarmed black man who was shot to death by police for carrying a toy BB gun that he planned to purchase from Walmart in a state that supports open carry laws.
I want people to protest for the boy who was killed on the playground of his community for wavy around a toy gun like any other child.
I want people to protest for the unarmed black man who was choked to death by police during a stop.

I hope that as a result of these events, we can have a better equipped police force - not with weaponry by with better behaviors and tactics. And I also hope that as civilians we can do a better job of working with the police force within our communities to benefit both sides.

Day 100

Always good to see mass transit spreading some holiday cheer! Wishing everyone a safe, loving, and prosperous holiday season :-)

Day 99

So I'm guilty of stretching out my last few days of happiness. Mostly because I wanted to include Thanksgiving, one of my favorite holidays of the year! As I near the end of this challenge - literally there is one more post - I am happy to welcome the close of 2014 and, God willing, the beginning of 2015. Another year, another chance to do it all again and to do more and to do it better than before.

Day 95

Although he didn't make it all the way through with his promise, it was very nice of the Mr to offer to bring me hot chocolate when walking me home from the bus stop in the evening. I'll keep wishing that it happens ^.^ But for now, the shared walk home is enough.

The successful landing of the Philae lander after years of travel on a moving comet is just astounding. I could not help but gawk and smile at this story. Hurray for science!! Talk about being fashionably late and making a grand entrance ^.^

Day 91

The weather has been surprisingly mild these past few days for November. Today it was nice and foggy. The eerie fog against the deeply colored trees created such a lovely scene as I took the train to school this morning. I remember when I was younger, I thought fog was caused by clouds settling down on the Earth. I'm sure there were attempts to capture the fog so I could have my own little piece of the clouds. Now that I'm older, I realize that's not quite how it works. Fog is still enjoyable nonetheless. It's been a while since I've experienced a good foggy day.

Day 80

November is here!!! This is one of my favorite months of the year. For the past few years I have been hosting my own Thanksgiving dinners. They usually turn out nice and I get to enjoy my favorite member of the poultry family!!! There is nothing better than a nice piece of turkey with stuffing and cranberry sauce. Yummmmm.

#100days

Day 79

As I grow older I notice more and more that I am coming into the age when people start losing their parents. I have encountered several situations already in which friends have had to say good bye to their fathers and mothers. I am greatful that I can still enjoy and love my mom and dad. I hope to have them around for many more years.

I ran into another hijabi at school today during our annual symposium for all students completing research. Hearing her say "I always love running into other hijabis. It makes me so happy," put a smile on my face. It is nice to get a smile or salaams from people who would otherwise be strangers.

Days 73

Looking forward to Halloween. For a reason I can't explain, I have been more excited about this holiday now than as a child. I think it's the combination of for-real dressing up (I've come across some killer costumes out in the street) and candy (SUGAR) and seeing all the little ones have fun. Love this decor from a house in my neighborhood. They really got into the spirit. It's hard to see, but one of the skeletons has a spray can and is vandalizing the building. Teehee

My husband and I went out for a quick IT job on Saturday to fix his former graduate advisor's computer. After he finished, we were presented with a gorgeous lithograph of New Orleans. He had had the same lithograph at one point in time in the past, but the original gifter - his grandmother - un gifted it from him and decided to keep it for herself. Funny how it came back to him in the end anyways.

Day 56

"Nothing haunts us like the things we didn't buy" is a quote I've seen floating around Instagram these past couple weeks. I would like to change it to "Nothing haunts us like the things we didn't try to win!" One of my favorite fashion sites is having a contest sponsored by No nonsense to win a gift card; I never win anything, so here goes nothing!! Keep your fingers crossed for me and check out Kendra's blog.

Response to Kendra's questions:
My favorite look is the Boot Sock. I have been looking forward to trying this style out myself.
YES! I would wear skeggings; they look fun and unique. I also like the extra modesty ^.^

** Disclosure (in case it isn't clear already): I received a sweepstakes entry in exchange for blogging about this promotion.

Day 55

One of my favorite shows on NPR is This American Life. Recently, one of the producers of TAL started a spinoff series called Serial. Serial follows a story, in depth, over the course of many episodes. At first, it sounds like some long, boring drawn out thing compared to TAL, but I have been thoroughly sucked in by the first two episodes already. This first season of Serial focuses on the murder of a Baltimore high school student by her ex-boyfriend. At first glance, the case seems simple open and shut, but the reporting skills of the Serial staff bring to light the many nuances and ambiguities in this case. It's riveting to follow, but also extremely bittersweet when you consider that lives have been forever changed by things that were said and not said, by actions taken and not taken. This is exceptional storytelling and journalism at its best.

Day 53

I have a slightly strange obsession with loving all things related to cleaning. This past year I started using the Swiffer line of products and have not thought to look back once. Sunday, while doing grocery shopping, I tried out the king of all vacuums: the amazing Dyson. It was an unreal experience. I absolutely loved it!! There is nothing more empowering than fighting dirt with top of the line cleaning products. I can't wait to get my hands on one. Hopefully before the end of the year.

Day 52

Eid Mubarak!! I wasn't able to make the trip with my husband to visit my family this year, so instead we had a quiet holiday in the city. We prayed at a really cute Indonesian mosque just around the corner from our house. All the people were extremely friendly and welcoming. Day 22

I have started listening to audio books after following the recommendation of the same friend who gave me a book yesterday. I am very happy to say that I absolutely LOVE it. Especially nowadays when everything can be downloaded in your fancy smart phone, there is no stigma to worry about in being considered someone who enjoys an audio book. I have about three hours left in Gulp by Mary Roach and I'm sad to see the time quickly winding down. However, this just means there are more books to listen to on the horizon and I now have a new hobby to indulge myself in.

Day 21

Unexpected surprise today from a friend - a new book. How sweet!!

Deep down I've always had a slight envy for people who can devour books. I'm a very slow reader so I tend to shy away from novels that are very demanding. My commitment to a career in science has also trained me to have little respect for anything longer than 10 to 12 pages with no figures and is not a text book. This book will be a good challenge for me - a way to strengthen my reading muscles. I hope to start it soon as it comes highly recommended by the gifter.

Day 14

In a previous post, I discussed two giant zucchinis I had received from a club member's garden. Yesterday, I cut open the second vegetable of the pair and made a nice sized portion of fried zucchini . . . from just HALF of it. I ran out of batter and was only able to fry up about 2/3 of this portion. Currently, I have made two frittatas and fried zucchini and I still have one half of these humongous squashes that is untouched. I think I will try my hand at making zucchini bread.

I told you it was a lot of zucchini!! And I love it; it makes me happy ^.^ It's also very cost effective and healthy. These plants were grown under completely organic conditions and I will be able to get about four hearty dishes from just two plants. Just what you need when money is a lil tight.

Day 9

For a reason I have yet been able to explain or understand, there are bird nests on literally every tree that lines the road by my laboratory. Most of them are half finished and look kind of clumsy. Either the maker of the nest was dumped by his intended mate, or these nests were just failed attempts at getting it right. Maybe the view from the tree branches wasn't ideal. I just love trying to understand how a little bird can build such an amazing home with its beak and twigs. Compared to all the resources and measurements and heavy machinery humans use to build a residence, birds can do the same and even better just on their innate instinct. Bird nests are such an amazing creation and they will never cease to awe and amaze me.

Day 8

Watching Anthony Bordain cover my city and literally my neighborhood in his show Layover: Extra mile. My husband and I could not stop laughing at how honestly our city was portrayed in the show - the good, the bad, the ugly.
